Apple TV’s new series Margo's Got Money Troubles has assembled an all-star cast featuring five Oscar nominees and winners: Nicole Kidman, Greg Kinnear, Michelle Pfeiffer, Marcia Gay Harden, and the lead, Elle Fanning. The plot follows a talented student (Elle Fanning) who becomes pregnant after an affair with a married professor. Left without support, a job, or financial means, she lands on a desperate idea: it’s time to start an OnlyFans blog.
The comedy-drama is based on the novel of the same name by American author Rufi Thorpe. Released in June 2024, the book was among the first—but certainly not the last—reflections on a complex and taboo subject: what exactly does sex work look like in the modern age?
In the Death, Sex & Money podcast from 14 April 2026, the author speaks candidly about her research into the lives and motivations of OnlyFans creators. "To get them to talk to me, I paid a $50 tip—a sign of respect for their time and effort," shares Thorpe. "I wrote things like: 'Hi, I’m a writer, and I want to tell the story of sex work specifically as work, not as a tragedy or a shame.'" Thorpe notes that she intentionally spoke with creators of mid-range popularity to ensure their responses were honest and personal.
OnlyFans is an adult-content platform founded in 2016 by businessman Timothy Stokely in London. Two years later, it came under the management of Leonid Radvinsky (who passed away from cancer in March 2026). The number of content creators on the platform now exceeds 4.6 million and continues to grow annually. According to Only Guider and other sources, users spend over $7.2 billion on the platform each year, with 80% going directly to the creators.
Thorpe’s book avoids passing definitive moral judgments, refusing to either glorify or stigmatise the profession. Instead, it honestly portrays it as a demanding daily job—involving scriptwriting, filming, editing, and community management—while highlighting the intense social pressure on the protagonist. Despite Margo’s work never involving physical contact with clients, she faces judgment from everyone: from her own mother to vigilant social workers. The narrative is further complicated by Margo's status as a single mother. She becomes "good" by providing a comfortable life for her child through her earnings, yet remains "terrible" in the eyes of a society that failed to help her but is quick to condemn her. Thorpe’s characters are lost but human, making it easy for readers to sympathise with their plight.
The showrunner for the series is David E. Kelley, a legend of American television known for The Practice, Big Little Lies, The Undoing, and Nine Perfect Strangers. Boasting 11 Emmy Awards, this series marks the first time Kelley has collaborated professionally with his wife, Michelle Pfeiffer.
The limited series premieres on 15 April (with the first three episodes) and runs until the finale on 20 May. The first and currently only season consists of 8 episodes.
