The old Valencia lighthouse will be relocated to La Marina, a popular waterfront recreational area on the site of the former port docks, to make it accessible to both residents and visitors. The decision was made by the interdepartmental commission for the management of La Marina, which comprises representatives from the Valencia City Council and the Port Authority of Valencia (APV).
Currently, the lighthouse stands in a restricted area far from the city centre, completely closed to the public. It will be moved to a new prominent spot in La Marina, directly opposite the iconic Veles e Vents building. Following the completion of the northern expansion of the Port of Valencia in 2012, the lighthouse became "landlocked" by new infrastructure and could no longer perform its maritime signalling function. As a result, it was permanently decommissioned in June 2015.
The lighthouse dates back to 1905, though it has undergone several reconstructions over the decades. Its first stone was laid by King Alfonso XIII of Spain, and there have been proposals to officially register the structure as an Asset of Local Relevance (BRL). Remarkably, the lighthouse was originally constructed on iron rails, allowing it to be rolled and repositioned as the port expanded. However, as the layout of the modern docks eventually prevented it from being moved any further east, a new lighthouse was ultimately built to replace it.
In a statement, the Port Authority noted that placing the old lighthouse in a vibrant, public space will revitalise an iconic landmark that holds immense social and historical value for the port and Valencia’s traditional maritime neighbourhoods.
