Previously, entering the British overseas territory required passing through a separate British border control. Now, that checkpoint has vanished along with the fence. A standard Schengen visa, which permits travel within mainland Spain, is now fully valid for Gibraltar as well. Active passport controls remain only at Gibraltar’s airport and port to screen individuals arriving directly by air or sea without passing through Spanish territory. Most importantly, this open border eases the daily grind for over 15,000 Spanish residents who cross the boundary every single day for work.
Hundreds of people, including Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the Mayor of La Línea, Juan Franco, gathered at the border at midnight to witness the transition and become the first to cross without a single document check.
Picardo recalled that the city had experienced a similar wave of emotion in 1982, when the first administration of Felipe González reopened the pedestrian crossing. That crossing had been closed for 13 years under the orders of dictator Francisco Franco. Walking across the border control-free this morning, Picardo concluded: "The Franco era has ended." Meanwhile, the Mayor of La Línea fondly remembered his grandmother, who worked as a seamstress in Gibraltar until Franco sealed the border in 1969. He expressed his "full and absolute gratitude to the Spanish government, because under other political circumstances, this agreement probably would not have been reached."
Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, stated that the Gibraltar agreement opens a new chapter for the Campo de Gibraltar region, allowing both sides to leave behind more than three centuries of disputes. "We are turning the page of history to transition from living 'back-to-back' to living 'hand-in-hand,'" Albares added.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the treaty with the UK as "fair" and asserted that it fully protects Spain's national interests. Under the agreement, Madrid will be responsible for implementing Schengen protocols at Gibraltar’s port and airport, including the control and issuance of visas. Additionally, a customs union is being established between the EU and Gibraltar.
Sánchez also highlighted the joint management model for the local airport, which he noted will unlock fresh opportunities for tourism, investments, and regional growth. "Today, Campo de Gibraltar reunites with its true destiny: to be a bridge, not a barrier; a horizon, not a border; a master, rather than a victim of history," he concluded.
