The massive forest fire raging through the municipality of Orés, located in the Cinco Villas region of Zaragoza province, has nearly doubled in size overnight—exploding from 7,600 to 12,000 hectares. Despite a critical shift in wind direction, the intense wall of flames managed to surround the historic town of Uncastillo during the early hours of Friday morning.

"The town center has been saved, but the surrounding countryside is completely destroyed," reported Uncastillo Mayor Teresa Pueyo on the morning of July 17.

Emergency crews spent the night fiercely defending the evacuated settlements of Malpica de Arba and Uncastillo proper as the fire front advanced. The overall perimeter of the fire has now grown to a staggering 60 kilometres, forcing the closure of three local highways. "This is a ferocious fire that is simply devouring one village after another," Mayor Pueyo added.

Mass Evacuations and Regional Mobilisation

In total, the wildfire has forced the emergency evacuation of more than 1,000 residents across six distinct municipalities:

  • Zaragoza: Orés, Asín, Luesia, Malpica de Arba, and Uncastillo.
  • Navarre: Petilla de Aragón.

A specialised crisis control command centre has been operational in Zaragoza since 9:00 AM on Friday to evaluate the fast-moving disaster. The wildfire has been designated a Level 2 emergency, triggering the deployment of Spain's Military Emergencies Unit (UME) alongside mutual-aid firefighting assets dispatched from neighbouring Navarre, Castile and León, La Rioja, and the Valencian Community.

The firefighting contingent currently consists of approximately 450 field personnel, over 30 aerial water-bombers and helicopters, and upwards of 300 UME military personnel. Efforts are concentrated heavily on the Cerro de Cinco Villas hill—a dense pine forest zone directly adjacent to the residential districts of Los Robles and San Lorenzo. The local municipality has opened the municipal sports complex to act as a primary emergency shelter for the displaced evacuees.

Madrid: Lozoyuela Fire Staggered After Arsonist Arrest

The disaster in Orés is part of a broader outbreak of major wildfires currently plaguing Spain, with three highly destructive blazes active simultaneously across the country.

In the Community of Madrid, crews continue to battle a major fire in Lozoyuela, which originally broke out on the afternoon of July 16. The flames have laid waste to more than 700 hectares. While emergency services report that progress is developing favourably, the perimeter was still not fully stabilised by Friday afternoon. A total of 100 people were evacuated on Thursday, while more than 2,000 residents across Buitrago del Lozoya, Cinco Villas, and Mangirón (Puentes Viejas municipality) have been ordered to remain confined indoors to avoid heavy smoke inhalation.

Local authorities confirmed the arrest of a 52-year-old man suspected of intentionally starting the Lozoyuela fire. Residents originally flagged the suspect after noticing him acting suspiciously and attempting to flee the area as the fire started. Upon his arrest, police recovered a lighter on his person. A background check revealed the suspect has prior criminal records for identical arson offences committed in other Spanish provinces.

Guadalajara: Sierra Norte Natural Park in Jeopardy

Simultaneously, in the province of Guadalajara, a swift-moving fire in the locality of La Mierla has consumed roughly 900 hectares in just a few hours. The blaze has dangerously approached the core protection zone of the Sierra Norte Natural Park.

Emergency teams ordered the immediate evacuation of residents in La Mierla, Muriel, and Umbralejo. Confinement and stay-at-home orders have also been enforced in Almiruete, Palancares, and areas surrounding the Beleña reservoir to guarantee public safety amid zero-visibility conditions.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), wildfire risk remains designated as "very high" or "extreme" across 17 major sectors of the Iberian Peninsula this Friday. Forecasters warn that due to persistent heatwaves and dryness, weather conditions are expected to deteriorate further over the coming weekend.
