    Valencia Aquarium Names Shark After Ferran Torres Following World Cup Victory

    The Valencia Oceanogràfic found a unique way to celebrate Ferran Torres' World Cup victory: naming one of its resident sharks in honour of the footballer.

    Torres, a Valencia native and FC Barcelona forward, served as an ambassador for the Oceanogràfic in 2024 and 2025, actively supporting its marine conservation foundation. The organisation decided to honour this partnership and express its gratitude to the player.

    The shark named after Torres is a two-meter-long male sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) residing in the aquarium's famous underwater tunnel. The player's long-standing pitch moniker, "El Tiburón" ("The Shark"), has now taken on a literal meaning.

    The sandbar shark is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to steep population declines caused by commercial fishing, late maturity, and low reproduction rates.

    Just a few months ago, Ferran Torres was facing heavy criticism on social media, with journalists labelling him Spain's most controversial forward. However, in the World Cup final against Argentina, he scored the match-winning goal to secure the World Cup trophy for Spain.
