Spain’s First Flying Taxis to Take Flight in 2028 on Málaga–Marbella Route

Spain's first flying taxis will take to the skies as early as 2028. The testbed will be the route between Málaga and Marbella, selected by air navigation service provider Enaire. Air taxis—electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs—will be tested as part of the European Verti-Go project, involving Enaire alongside eleven other industry leaders.

Enaire's primary objective during air taxi testing is to establish safety protocols allowing eVTOLs to navigate harmoniously alongside commercial aircraft and cargo drones. The Málaga–Marbella corridor will evaluate air traffic digitalisation and route management between the two cities, serving as a trial run for future Mediterranean airspace corridors.

Led by aerospace manufacturer Honeywell Aerospace and supported by Europe's SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking initiative, the consortium of twelve organisations includes Spanish airport operator Aena. The three-year project, running from June 2026 to May 2029, carries a total budget of €6.77 million, with €4.99 million backed by European funding.

Alongside state-level trials, private industry is forging ahead with commercial launch plans. Spanish firm Crisalion Mobility is focusing specifically on the Málaga–Marbella corridor. At a ceremony held at the Málaga Aeronautical Museum, the company signed a strategic agreement with private charter operator iJet Aviation.

A single air taxi passenger ticket is expected to cost approximately €100. Designed to accommodate a pilot and up to five passengers, the eVTOL aircraft can travel up to 130 kilometres at speeds reaching 180 kilometers per hour. According to company projections, the flight between Málaga and Marbella will take just 15 minutes—compared to a 40-minute drive in clear traffic.
