From Meme Subject to World Cup Hero: The Unlikely Journey of Ferran Torres

Just a few months ago, Ferran Torres was a frequent target of internet jokes: social media users tallied his misses, fans debated whether he belonged in Spain’s starting XI, and journalists dubbed him the country's most controversial forward.

But in the World Cup final against Argentina, Torres got his ultimate chance. In the 106th minute of extra time, he scored the match's only goal to secure Spain’s second World Cup title.

Ferran's story is special because it looks nothing like a fairytale about a football prodigy who had everything handed to him. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Born on a Leap Day and Raised Near Valencia

Ferran Torres García was born on February 29, 2000, in Foios, a small town just a few kilometers from Valencia. His birthday officially comes only once every four years—a fun fact that Spanish journalists love to bring up.

When he was six, his parents enrolled him in Valencia CF's academy, where he spent almost his entire childhood. He quickly became one of the club's most promising young talents.

Beyond his academy training, he spent hours practicing in his backyard. As the footballer himself recalled, his dog would constantly try to take the ball away from him, unwittingly helping him sharpen his technical skills.

Ferran even wore football boots to school—his mother, Fina García, bought him his first pair. The studs clattered loudly against the asphalt and school hallways. Everyone knew Ferran had arrived at school by that distinctive sound.

At 12, He Almost Quit Football

During his early teens, Torres grew nearly 12 centimeters in a single summer, and his body struggled to adjust. He recalled losing all feel for his own body, constantly falling over, losing coordination, being unable to play normally, and feeling convinced he would never be a good footballer again.

Torres remembered that it was the first time he seriously contemplated whether his football journey was over before it had even truly begun.

His Parents' Divorce Was a Devastating Blow

Around that same time, Ferran's parents divorced.

In an interview with Semana magazine, he opened up about how hard he took the separation.

“It was a real shock for me. I was only 12 or 13 years old, still very young, and I didn’t know how to handle it,” he recalled.

Football became his refuge during this difficult period. He poured even more time into training to avoid retreating into himself.

The most famous of them all is El Tiburón (“The Shark”). Today, a shark emoji almost always accompanies Torres’s name online. Yet Torres didn't come up with the nickname himself—it was coined by his Barcelona teammates, though he eventually embraced it as part of his personal identity. Living up to the title, Ferran is also an ambassador for the Oceanogràfic aquarium in Valencia.

In interviews, Ferran explained that the shark symbolizes constant forward motion, discipline, and relentless self-improvement. As he puts it, people only see the 90 minutes on the pitch, missing everything behind the scenes: daily training sessions, recovery, strict nutrition, and mental health work with a sports psychologist.

Eventually, after standout performances, social media would fill with shark imagery, with fans commenting “Mentalidad de tiburón” (“Shark mentality”)—acknowledging that Ferran always keeps pushing forward regardless of criticism.

However, there were less flattering jokes as well. Due to his frequent misses, fans spent years repeating the line: “Ferran moves like Ronaldo until it’s time to shoot.”

Another popular meme from recent seasons emerged thanks to Lamine Yamal. After several matches where Yamal delivered picture-perfect passes only for Ferran to miss the target, social media reacted with: “Imagine being Lamine Yamal.” Posts were frequently accompanied by images of the young star’s exasperated face.

Following the World Cup final, all those memes took a sudden 180-degree turn. In place of the usual jokes came new declarations: “Never doubt the Shark” and “Apologize to Ferran.” Meanwhile, an animal rescue association posted a tribute highlighting his work as an animal welfare advocate. As it turns out, Ferran has personally helped find loving homes for numerous abandoned dogs.

How He Saved Spain at World Cup 2026

At this tournament, Ferran was not the poster boy for the national team. Most of the media spotlight was focused on Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Nico Williams, Pedri, and Unai Simón.

Yet, it was Torres who stepped up to seal the nation's destiny.

Right after the final whistle, Torres confessed to reporters that this World Cup had been the most challenging ordeal of his life.
