Consumption of bottled water in Spain has risen noticeably in recent years — driven by concerns about the quality of tap water in some regions, the convenience of bottled water, and advertising.
The consumer protection organisation (OCU) has analysed more than 90 types of bottled water, both still and sparkling, taking into account aspects such as labelling, water source, price per litre, and environmental impact.
In the organisation's view, two brands can be called the best for value for money.
La Majuela (DIA supermarket) — a water low in minerals and sodium, and at an affordable price. Sourced from a spring in Zaragoza, it costs around €0.15 per litre, making it one of the best options for those who regularly buy bottled water and don't want to overpay.
Aquadeus — water from the Fuente Arquillo spring in the Sierra de Alcaraz mountain range in the province of Albacete. A balanced composition with a low mineral content. The average price is around €0.21 per litre.
In addition, the OCU has compiled a ranking of the best breakfast biscuits from Spanish supermarkets. The main criterion for assessment was the amount of added sugar.
