A Valencia court has sentenced footballer Rafa Mir, who was playing for Elche on loan from Sevilla, to 8.5 years in prison in a case of sexual assault and bodily harm.
In addition, Mir is required to pay the victim compensation of €64,000.
The case relates to a complaint filed against Mir in 2024. At the time, a 21-year-old woman accused the footballer of sexual assault at his home in Bétera (Valencia) after a party. In September 2024, Mir was detained as part of the investigation.
During the trial, the footballer himself denied his guilt, claiming that what happened was consensual. The prosecution had sought 10.5 years' imprisonment for him, but the court, in its verdict, reduced the term to 8.5 years.
The second defendant in the case, footballer Pablo Jara, received 2.5 years in prison for sexual assault, a crime against moral dignity, and minor bodily harm against another woman. In addition to imprisonment, Jara must pay the other victim compensation of €6,280.
The verdict was handed down on Monday. The court's decision is not yet legally binding and may be appealed by the parties.
