The Portuguese island of Madeira, just two hours by plane from Spain, is already being called Europe's answer to the Indonesian island of Bali. Here you can find volcanic landscapes, UNESCO-listed laurel forests, natural lava pools, and luxury villas.
And a trip to Madeira doesn't have to break the bank. A week's stay in a villa on the island of Porto Santo can come to less than €160. Lunch at local spots such as Poncha Tavern or Taberna Madeira costs between €5 and €10. Flights from Madrid typically come in at under €200, and from Tenerife you can find tickets from €50.
The island divides into several distinct zones. The north is home to dense laurel forests, deep ravines, the volcanic lava pools of Porto Moniz, and caves near São Vicente. The south is more urban — Funchal is the cultural and gastronomic heart of the island, while the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos has preserved its maritime character, complete with traditional boats. To the east lies Machico, the landing site of the first Portuguese navigators in the fifteenth century. The village of Ponta do Sol is considered one of the sunniest spots on the island, while Calheta offers artificial beaches and its own set of attractions.
The island's main architectural landmark is Funchal Cathedral, built between 1493 and 1514 entirely from local volcanic stone. It has changed remarkably little since the early period of colonisation. The interior is in the Mendicant Gothic style, and the locally sourced cedar ceiling is decorated with Mudéjar-style carved woodwork.
A mild climate year-round makes Madeira a viable destination at any time of year.
