Sardines have unexpectedly become one of the most viral products on social media — they are increasingly being called the new ‘secret’ to healthy and glowing skin. Vogue magazine has named canned sardines the new gastronomic trend among celebrities, and videos featuring the product are flooding social media feeds.
The publication of Vogue tells that the new trend was partly started by model Anok Yai, who eats a tin of sardines every evening to keep her skin smooth and glowing. Following her lead, model Alex Consani admitted that she tried to follow Yai's advice and noticed a ‘slight glow’ after just a couple of days. Actress Eva Longoria has also started eating sardines, pairing them with toasted bread and French butter. At the same time, thousands of users are writing about how their skin has improved due to eating sardines.
Nutritionist Rian Stevenson commented to Vogue that sardines are one of the most affordable and rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They are also low in mercury and very rich in calcium. Regardless of their benefits for the skin, sardines improve brain function and lift mood due to vitamin B12, which helps to balance the nervous system.
Stevenson notes that the new trend for sardines may be linked to their popularity among biohackers who are trying to ‘optimise’ their bodies to prolong their lives. However, she emphasises that people who are sensitive to histamines should be careful with tinned sardines and read the ingredients carefully.
‘Some brands of tinned sardines still contain sugar, too much salt and other additives, so it's important to be mindful of quality,’ concludes the nutritionist.
