Among Mercadona’s biscuit selection, options vary depending on their ingredients. Dietitian Yeray Moreno Jiménez analysed some of the supermarket's most popular biscuits and explained what shoppers should pay attention to when choosing.
According to him, it’s best not to be guided by packaging or bold marketing claims, but by the ingredients list and nutritional values. You should avoid Biscuits where sugar, syrups or refined flour are the main ingredients. Instead, products based on whole grains (such as oats, spelt or whole wheat), made with higher-quality vegetable oils, and without added sugar are preferable.
The dietitian singled out Hacendado Galletas Cookies 40% pepitas de chocolate as a poor choice due to palm oil among ingredients, very high calorie content (almost 500 kcal per 100 g) and a low proportion of real milk chocolate. He also advised against Hacendado Galletas Digestive Choco y Avena, which contains high amounts of glucose, fructose syrup and sugar.
A more balanced option, in his view, is Digestive Avena. Despite containing added sugar, it includes 44% oats and uses high-oleic sunflower oil. Another decent choice is Galletas de Avena y Semillas, with 15 g of sugar per 100 g, low levels of saturated fat and minimal additives. For children, the expert considers Galletas Divertidas Hacendado an acceptable option: they are made with rye flour, contain around 20 g of sugar per 100 g and have reduced salt.
