In Spain, the world’s first mobile app entirely dedicated to calçots is s now available on iOS and Android. (calçot — a variety of sweet white onion traditionally grown in Catalonia). Calçot App brings together more than 500 restaurants and farms holding the official quality seal. The app is particularly useful during the calçotada season — the Catalan food festival centred around this iconic onion.
The app works as an interactive map, helping users find restaurants serving calçot-based dishes, places selling calçot sauce, and artisan bakeries.
The project was initiated by entrepreneurs Gerard Cañellas Prades and Arnau Pérez de Tudela Guasch. According to them, the idea grew out of a need: every year during calçot season, people struggle to find high-quality produce and genuinely authentic venues. While developing the platform, the team carefully verified each location and established direct contact with producers and restaurants.
In addition to the map, the app features an editorial section called La Redolta, with news, reports and interesting facts about calçotada. The developers stress that the service is completely free for users and open to new producers who wish to join.
