Mercadona has introduced a new line of packaged baked goods at its experimental supermarket in Xirivella, near Valencia. The Tienda 9-format store, which opened several months ago, serves as a testing ground for new products before their potential rollout to thousands of the chain's stores across Spain and Portugal.
The bakery section now features pastries, doughnuts with cocoa cream reminiscent of Oreo biscuits, apple pie, hazelnut cream palmiers, and a pink cake in the style of the classic "Pink Panther." Prices range from €0.85 to €1.45 per pack. The new offerings complement existing products already in the standard range, such as cream and chocolate-filled pastries, and various types of doughnuts and palmiers.
Tienda 9 ("Store No. 9") is Mercadona's new store format, featuring a central production zone where slicing, cooking, and packaging are combined in one area. Finished products go straight to the shelves without additional intermediate steps. The store layout has also been redesigned — frozen and chilled products are grouped in a single zone for customers' convenience.
Mercadona plans to roll out the Tienda 9 format across its entire network by 2033, with a total investment of €3.7 billion. In 2026, 59 stores in Spain will be converted to the new model.
