Spain's Food Safety and Nutrition Agency (AESAN) has announced a recall of fresh cow's cheese under the Goya brand, following the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in the product. The health authorities of Aragón issued the alert.
The product being withdrawn from shelves is Queso Latino (Queso fresco de vaca) by Goya, sold in a 300g plastic tub. Two batches are subject to recall: 011056 with a best-before date of 31 May 2026, and 021046 with a best-before date of 30 May 2026.
AESAN is advising anyone who has this product at home to stop consuming it immediately. Those who have already eaten the cheese should seek medical attention if they develop symptoms of listeriosis — vomiting, diarrhoea, or fever. Pregnant women are advised to consult their doctor and to refer to AESAN's dietary guidelines for pregnancy.
Listeriosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, which is widespread in the environment and can be present in food — particularly soft cheeses, ready-to-eat meat products, cold-smoked fish, and unpasteurised milk. The bacterium is particularly dangerous because it continues to multiply even at low temperatures, including inside a refrigerator.
In most people the infection often passes without symptoms or in a mild form. However, for older people, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women, listeriosis can pose a serious risk — up to and including meningitis, sepsis, or miscarriage.
