A goat cheese from the Valencian Community has secured gold at one of the country's most prestigious gastronomic competitions, "Best Cheeses in Spain 2026" (Mejores Quesos de España), held during the Salón Gourmet exhibition in Madrid. The top prize was awarded to Caprilice, a semi-cured wine-infused cheese produced by the Elche-based company Lácteos Segarra.
This year, over 800 cheeses participated in the contest, evaluated by a panel of 64 experts. The cheese from Elche was crowned the winner in the category of "Young Goat Cheese from Pasteurised/Raw Milk."
The winning cheese combines artisanal cheesemaking traditions with the specifics of Mediterranean culture. It features a dense, semi-soft texture, distinguished by an ageing process involving wine, which imparts a rich aroma and a multifaceted flavour. Experts noted the fine balance between the characteristic intensity of goat’s milk and the subtle wine notes.
Lácteos Segarra is a family-owned business that has been operating since the 1960s. The company sells its products under brands such as Caprillice, Keslay, and Illiqués. Over the decades, the dairy farm has established itself as both a national and international benchmark in goat cheese production.
