Best Onion Tortilla
The best onion tortilla in the analysis was Mercadona’s Preparados version, priced at €6.54 per kilo, although it also contains E211.
Spain’s Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has published the results of a new study examining ready-made tortillas sold in supermarkets.
Experts analysed 33 products, and 22 of them failed the taste test. A panel of professional chefs carried out the assessment and agreed that the main flaws in most products were a "grainy" texture, a lack of juiciness, potatoes that were too firm, and poor binding with the egg. The chefs were particularly unimpressed by the versions made with onion.
That said, the organisation did not identify any major issues with the ingredients themselves. The average calorie content of the samples came to around 165 kcal per 100 grams, and under the Nutri-Score system, most received a C rating. However, experts found that some brands contained elevated levels of salt — more than 1%, and in some cases as many as six different additives. OCU drew particular attention to sodium benzoate (E211), which may trigger allergic reactions and, according to some findings, could potentially be linked to hyperactivity in children.
The best onion tortilla in the analysis was Mercadona’s Preparados version, priced at €6.54 per kilo, although it also contains E211.
As an alternative without this preservative, the experts recommend Al punto from Dia (€4.65 per kg).
Among the versions without onion, the highest score went to Corral de Monegros Fresca (€8.17 per kg), although it contains the same preservative as well.
For those who want to avoid additives, experts suggest taking a look at the Auchan tortilla from Alcampo (€4.48 per kg).
