During Fallas, Valencia traditionally makes buñuelos — fried doughnuts that are considered one of the festival’s main culinary symbols. In 2026, the best ones, according to the jury of a special competition, can be tasted in the town of Aldaia.
The first Valencia buñuelos contest was won by Los Buñuelos de Mary. The competition was organised by the cultural association Lo Rat Penat together with the Valencian Association of Professional Journalists, with the support of the city council. Jury members visited the participating venues on March 7 and evaluated the buñuelos using several criteria: ingredient quality, texture, shape, aroma, colour, appearance, and adherence to the traditional recipe.
During Fallas, Los Buñuelos de Mary will prepare its dessert at the El Origen restaurant in Aldaia. For the duration of the festival, the venue temporarily pauses its regular operations and turns into a place where buñuelos are handmade from morning to evening.
You can try the dessert only for nine days. On March 10 — from 17:00 to 21:00, and from March 12 to March 19 — from 08:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00. Organisers note that opening hours may be extended depending on visitor numbers. One doughnut will cost €0.80, half a dozen — €4.50, and a dozen — €9.
According to the results of the competition, second place went to the pastry shop L’Art del Sucre Sánchez Zaragozá in Valencia, and third place to Buñolería El Contraste in the Ruzafa neighbourhood.
