Zara has announced a collaboration with one of the most renowned designers of our time, John Galliano. The agreement is set for two years, during which the designer will create special seasonal collections for the brand. The first release is scheduled for September 2026.
According to the company’s official statement, Galliano will reinterpret Zara archives. The new collections will be based on pieces from past seasons. The designer will deconstruct them, altering silhouettes, materials, and details, transforming old models into new fashion interpretations. “Guided by haute couture principles and an author-driven approach, the collections will be released seasonally throughout the collaboration, which begins in September 2026,” the brand stated.
This collaboration is part of a new strategy actively developed by Marta Ortega Pérez, daughter of Inditex founder Amancio Ortega, which owns Zara. Under her leadership, the brand has increasingly collaborated with well-known figures in the industry. Previous projects include collections with Narciso Rodriguez and Stefano Pilati, as well as campaigns with model Kate Moss and fashion photographer Steven Meisel. However, the collaboration with Galliano will be the first of this scale and duration — previously, such projects were limited to a single collection or short series.
For Galliano himself, this is also an important career milestone. In 2024, he left the French fashion house Maison Margiela, which he had led since 2014, significantly boosting its sales and restoring its popularity. Before that, Galliano worked at major haute couture houses, including Givenchy and Christian Dior.
Born in Gibraltar, John Galliano grew up in London and graduated from the prestigious Central Saint Martins in 1984. Shortly after, he launched his own brand and quickly became one of the key figures in British fashion, winning the “British Designer of the Year” award four times in ten years.
His career has been both successful and controversial. In 2011, Galliano was dismissed from Dior as chief designer after a video surfaced online showing him, intoxicated, insulting two women in a Paris restaurant and saying, “I love Hitler.” His return to the industry came in 2014 thanks to Maison Margiela, where he managed to rebuild his reputation.
