Real Colegio de las Escuelas Pías in Valencia is once again opening its doors to visitors following the completion of a major restoration of its defining architectural feature — the monumental dome. The project has been recognised with a Europa Nostra 2026 award, one of the highest honours in the field of European cultural heritage.
The Royal College was founded in the eighteenth century by the Piarist order, whose primary mission is the free education and Christian upbringing of children and young people. Built in the neoclassical style, the building features a dome with a diameter of 24.5 metres — one of the largest in the Christian world.
The restoration involved the repair of more than 32,000 glazed ceramic tiles and the reopening of the upper lantern, which has restored natural light to the interior of the church. The project combined traditional techniques with modern technology, including 3D laser scanning, thermal analysis, and the creation of a digital building model for its future preservation.
A visit to the college includes a tour of the neoclassical complex and a climb to the first ring of the dome, from which the true scale of the space and its engineering structure can be fully appreciated. The entrance is on Calle de Carniceros, 6.
The first guided visits are scheduled for 16 May and 13 June. An individual visit with an audio guide costs €8, a guided tour costs €12, and for groups of 12 or more, €10 per person. Tickets are available exclusively on the website — booking is required. Further dates will be announced soon.
