Uber has included Madrid in its list of cities to launch a driverless car service. The Spanish capital will become one of the new battles for leadership in this sector, where Uber competes with Waymo (owned by Google) and Tesla. The company's goal is to create the world's largest fleet of autonomous cars by 2029.
According to Bloomberg, driverless taxis will appear in 10 cities around the world, including Madrid, by the end of 2026. Uber's driverless taxis are already available in some US cities, including Austin, Atlanta, Dallas and Phoenix, and also in Dubai.
Uber is collaborating with several autonomous technology providers and car manufacturers to implement driverless taxis. The company has tested them using Hyundai models. In January 2026, Uber announced a collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and NVDA to create a global robotaxi platform.
The introduction of driverless taxis is a gradual process. In the early stages, there is a driver in the car who is ready to take control in an emergency. However, in some cities, such as San Francisco, robotaxis have already become a part of traffic and operate without a driver.
The first prototypes of Uber's robotaxis were unveiled in January at CES 2026. The vehicle was developed in collaboration with Lucid Motors and startup Nuro, and it has a surround-view system based on cameras, radars and sensors that allow it to analyse the traffic situation in real time.
