A cold cyclone that has settled to the west of the Iberian Peninsula will bring unstable weather to Spain on Friday and over the weekend. Heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and possible hail are expected — particularly across the west and centre of the country. Saturday is set to be the most adverse day.
On Friday, rainfall will begin early in the morning in the north-west of the peninsula and on the Balearic Islands. During the day, rain will move into the interior and the north. Particularly intense storms are expected across the Cantabrian region, the Ebro basin, and the Iberian Mountains. AEMET has issued an orange-level warning for rainfall in southern Mallorca, along with yellow warnings in Aragón, Cantabria, Castilla y León, the Basque Country, Navarre, and La Rioja.
Temperatures will rise in the east of the peninsula and fall along the Atlantic coast. Highs of up to 27°C are expected in Seville and 26°C in Córdoba. Mountain areas and the north will be cool — from 4°C in Teruel to 5°C in Soria.
Saturday will be the worst day. The Atlantic cyclone will merge with a new Mediterranean depression, triggering rain across virtually the entire country with possible hail. The heaviest rainfall is expected in the south-west and around the Sierra de Gredos, where accumulated totals could reach 100 litres per square metre, as well as in Galicia and Asturias.
Snow will fall above 2,000 metres. On the Canary Islands, cloudy skies are expected with light rain on the northern sides of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Yellow warnings for rain and storms are also in effect in Cantabria, Castilla y León, and Extremadura. Temperatures in Alicante, Bilbao, Girona, Ourense, Palma, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife will reach 23°C, while Madrid will not get above 20°C.
On Sunday, the cyclone will continue to affect the weather. Rain is expected across most of the country, with the heaviest falls in the afternoon over the north-west of the peninsula and the Sierra de Gredos area. Temperatures will remain below seasonal norms in many regions.
