Spain’s Council of Ministers has approved a measure to introduce a new monthly payment of €200 for every child until the age of 18. The measure forms part of the government’s Sustainable Development Strategy to 2030.
The proposal is for a universal child benefit, meaning all families would be entitled to the payment regardless of income. Under the plan, every household with a minor would receive €200 per month — equivalent to €2,400 per year for each child.
The reform has not yet implemented. The government intends to introduce it by 2030. According to the proposal, eligibility would require proof of legal residence in Spain, registration at a local address and submission of a family record book (libro de familia).
The initiative was previously championed by the Sumar party, which sought to include the benefit in the national budget. However, due to the lack of agreement on the budget, the measure was instead incorporated into the Sustainable Development Strategy to 2030.
The benefit would cost the state around €20 billion per year. The authorities note that the measure is aimed at eliminating child poverty. According to UNICEF data from November 2025, Spain ranks second in the EU for levels of child poverty, behind Bulgaria.
