Spain will introduce a nationwide public transport pass starting January 15, 2026, covering commuter and regional trains as well as intercity buses. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The new monthly pass will cost €60, with a discounted price of €30 for young people under 26. It will allow unlimited travel on Renfe Cercanías (commuter rail) and Media Distancia (regional trains), as well as on state-run intercity bus routes operated by the Ministry of Transport.
Metro systems and city buses are not included in the pass for now, as no agreement has yet been reached with Spain’s autonomous communities and municipalities.
According to government estimates, the new pass could help passengers save up to 60% on monthly transport costs.
In addition, on December 23 the Council of Ministers is expected to approve an extension of all existing transport subsidies throughout 2026. These include discounts of up to 40% on standard travel passes, up to 50% on youth passes, and free public transport for children under 14. The government also plans to extend the €20 monthly commuter rail pass, as well as current discounts on regional and intercity routes, including Avant trains.
The nationwide pass will be available via the Renfe website and app, through state bus operators, and at ticket offices and vending machines. To qualify for the youth discount, passengers under 26 will need to register in advance on the Ministry of Transport’s website to receive a code reducing the price to €30.
Prime Minister Sánchez has urged Spain’s autonomous regions to join the initiative in the future, allowing the pass to be expanded to urban transport systems and bringing Spain’s model closer to those used in Germany and Austria.
