The travel guide Lonely Planet has published its list of the 20 best beaches in Europe, featuring several Spanish locations. Playa de Ses Illetes on the island of Formentera secured 5th place in the European rankings and was named the best in Spain. Located on the northern tip of the island, it is considered one of the most picturesque spots in the Mediterranean.
The primary draw of Ses Illetes is its unique geography. This narrow strip of land is lapped by turquoise Mediterranean waters on both sides. Its fine white sand gives it a visual resemblance to Caribbean resorts, the guide highlights.
The beach is located within the Ses Salines Natural Park, renowned for its ecosystem and biodiversity. Ses Illetes stretches for approximately 450 metres, divided by a rocky area and surrounded by dunes with wooden walkways for strolling. Furthermore, its shallow waters make it an ideal destination for families with children.
However, its status as a protected natural area comes with restrictions. Parking is permitted only in designated areas, and many tourists reach the beach via public transport from the town of La Savina.
Three other Spanish locations also made the list of Europe's best beaches:
— Cala Macarella on the island of Menorca, a picturesque cove with crystal-clear water and pine-covered cliffs;
— Playa des Coll Baix in Mallorca, a wild beach nestled among the rocks;
— Playa de las Catedrales in Galicia, the famous "Beach of the Cathedrals" known for its giant stone arches.
