Spain's Ministry of Health has reported a new hantavirus case in a patient in quarantine at the Gómez Ulla military hospital in Madrid.
This is the second confirmed infection among the 14 Spanish nationals evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship. The first case was confirmed in early May; that patient is now recovering.
Ministry sources say the second patient is currently showing no symptoms. He remains under medical observation and has been moved to the high-isolation unit (UATAN).
The new hantavirus case was detected within the existing isolation regime and poses no risk to the general public, the Ministry of Health has stated.
The remaining 12 passengers have tested negative for the virus. They will be retested next week. If their PCR results remain negative after 28 days of quarantine (from 7 June), they will be able to continue their isolation at home under safety protocols.
