Las Fallas in Valencia is approaching its climax, and the schedule is becoming increasingly packed. During the day, locals and tourists walk around the fallas and attend the mascletà, after which it’s time for nighttime pyrotechnics.
On Monday, the first major castillo (fireworks display) of the main week of Las Fallas took place near the City of Arts and Sciences. Traditionally, the pyrotechnic program runs for three days, from March 16 to 18, with a different company presenting the show each evening. The first fireworks display in the series was created by Pirotecnia del Mediterráneo, one of the companies of the Valencian pyrotechnic school.
These fireworks are designed as full-fledged performances, and like any major show, they are given a name. Monday’s show was called Higge, derived from the Danish word meaning a pleasant time spent together. Thousands of spectators came to watch the fireworks.
A La Cotorra photographer also attended the event — here’s how it looked.
