The 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place in Los Angeles. The triumph of the night was the film “One Battle After Another” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The movie won six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Casting and Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn).
The film’s main rival was the horror movie “Sinners” directed by Ryan Coogler. It received 16 nominations, setting a record for the ceremony. In the end, the film won awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score, while Michael B. Jordan, who played the lead role, was named Best Actor.
The award for Best Actress went to Jessie Buckley for her role in the film “Hamnet”. Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie “Weapons”.
The film “Frankenstein,” directed by Guillermo del Toro, also performed well, winning three Oscars — for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.
The award for Best International Feature Film went to the Norwegian film “Sentimental Value” directed by Joachim Trier.
In the Best Animated Feature category, “K-Pop Demon Hunters” won. The animated film also received the award for Best Original Song (Golden Globe).
In the Best Documentary Feature category, the winner was “Mr Nobody Against Putin”, created by Pavel Talankin, a teacher from the Ural city of Karabash, and American director David Borenstein.
“For four years, we have been looking at the starry sky and making our most important wish. A very important wish. But there are countries where instead of shooting stars, bombs and drones fall from the sky. For the sake of our future, for all our children, let’s stop all wars. Now,” Talankin said during the award ceremony.
Other participants in the ceremony also commented on global events. Host Conan O’Brien joked at the beginning of the evening that the ceremony was taking place under increased security measures and that “this evening could become political.” He also ironically mentioned an alternative show that supporters of the MAGA movement of U.S. President Donald Trump could organise.
Comedian Jimmy Kimmel, while presenting the winner for Best Documentary Feature, touched on the topic of freedom of speech. He noted that true courage is telling stories for which people can be killed in some countries.
Spanish actor Javier Bardem, before announcing the winner in the Best International Feature Film category, said from the stage, “No to war. Free Palestine.”
Some winners also addressed global conflicts and political tensions. Accepting the award for Best Director, Paul Thomas Anderson said:
“I made this film to tell my children that I’m very sorry that we left them this terrible world, and also to encourage them to become the generation that will have common sense and decency.”
