A large-scale tractor protest by farmers will take place in Valencia this Thursday, December 18, organized by the agricultural union La Unió Llauradora i Ramadera.
Protesters say that EU authorities, the Spanish government and regional administrations are failing to adequately address the spread of imported pests and plant diseases, which farmers warn pose a serious threat to Valencia’s agricultural sector.
La Unió’s Secretary General Carles Peris stressed that protecting an export-oriented agricultural industry, which plays a strategic role in the regional economy, depends on effective preventive measures. According to him, insufficient controls could result in sanitary restrictions and significant economic losses, affecting both producers and public administrations.
Peris called for stricter border controls in Spain and in countries of origin, arguing that imported produce and plant materials should be thoroughly inspected before being authorized for shipment or circulation.
The demonstration will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Palau de la Generalitat on Plaza de Manises and will conclude at the Delegación del Gobierno building on Plaza del Temple.
La Unió has warned that the participation of tractors in the march may cause traffic disruptions and road closures, urging residents to plan their routes in advance.
