At the height of the Easter holidays, with Spain's Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) forecasting up to 10 million journeys across the country, it is essential to plan not only your travel but your shopping as well. Here is our guide to the opening hours for supermarkets and shopping centres across Spain, with a specific focus on Valencia.
Mercadona traditionally closes on public holidays and Sundays. This year, stores will operate as usual until Wednesday, 1 April. In regions where Maundy Thursday (2 April) is not a holiday (such as Valencia and Catalonia), supermarkets will open as normal. On Good Friday (3 April), stores will be closed due to the national holiday, with the exception of those located in major tourist and coastal areas. In these locations, supermarkets will operate on a special schedule from 09:00 to 15:00. Standard hours will resume on Saturday, 4 April. On Easter Sunday (5 April), stores will remain closed as per tradition. In regions where Easter Monday (6 April) is a holiday, including the Valencian Community, shops will not open on that day.
At Carrefour, several stores will remain open even during the holidays and on Sunday. Typically, these supermarkets operate from 09:00 to 22:00, with some locations open 24 hours. However, schedules vary by location, so we recommend checking the store's website in advance.
Lidl stores also operate on varying schedules depending on the region and district. Some shops will be open during the holidays but on reduced hours, closing mid-afternoon. It is advisable to check the Lidl website to see if your local store is open.
DIA and Aldi will also operate on reduced schedules during the holidays, with many stores closing by early afternoon. It is best to verify opening times beforehand on the DIA and Aldi websites.
On 3 April (Good Friday) and 5 April (Easter Sunday), most major shopping centres will be open without restrictions. These include El Corte Inglés, Aqua, Nuevo Centro, Arena, MN4, Bonaire, Ikea, Gran Turia, and El Osito.
On 2 and 4 April, all shopping centres will operate according to their usual schedules. On 6 April (Easter Monday), most large shopping centres in Valencia and Alicante will be closed. However, in designated "tourist zones," shops may remain open throughout the week. This includes El Manar in Massalfassar and Epicentre in Sagunto, as well as establishments in coastal towns like Gandía or Cullera.
In Alicante, shopping centres will remain open in Benidorm, Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Dénia, Jávea, and Calpe. In Castellón, centres in Peñíscola, Benicàssim, Oropesa del Mar, and Vinaròs will also be available to serve visitors throughout the festive period.
