Cuban musician and TikToker known as @magdi.music has sparked online debate after comparing the Spanish and American healthcare systems.
“In Spain, there’s something you get for free that in the United States can completely ruin you. And no, it’s not rent or food. It’s something much more serious: your health,” Magdi says at the beginning of the video.
He adds that in Spain, access to healthcare does not depend on how much money you have at the moment you need treatment. “In Spain, with all its flaws, you go in, they treat you, and you continue living your life,” he explains, contrasting it with the American system, where, according to him, even an ordinary hospital visit can leave people with thousands of dollars in debt.
The line that drew the strongest reaction was: “There [in the US] you earn more money, yes, but you also live in fear of getting sick; here [in Spain] you may not become rich, but you also won’t go bankrupt because of illness.” In the same video, Magdi clarifies that he is not trying to attack the United States or portray it as an entirely negative system.
Responding to critics who reminded him that Spanish healthcare is not actually free but funded through taxpayers’ money, Magdi did not disagree: “Of course, I mean that you don’t have to pay thousands of euros when you go to the hospital.” At the end of the video, he asked followers a question that triggered a flood of comments: “Would you rather earn more money or live more peacefully?”
