Spanish alpine skier Audrey Pascual has won the gold medal in the super-G at the Winter Paralympic Games being held in Italy.
The 21-year-old posted the fastest time on the Cortina d’Ampezzo course — 1:17.82 — beating her rivals to become Paralympic champion. Japan’s Momoka Muraoka took silver, while China’s Situn Liu won bronze.
It is Pascual’s second medal at these Games: a few days earlier, she claimed silver in the downhill.
The Spaniard started second and delivered a confident run with no major errors, taking the turns cleanly and keeping her balance. One of the main favourites for gold had been Germany’s Anna-Lena Forster, who has dominated the discipline in recent years, but she was disqualified after going off course.
In the stands, Pascual was cheered on by family and friends — around 35 people who travelled to Italy with Spanish flags and pink caps bearing her name.
For the young athlete, these are her first Paralympic Games, which she reached after a standout season: overall victory in the giant slalom standings and 17 World Cup medals (10 gold, six silver and one bronze). Now she has added Paralympic gold to that list of achievements.
