On the morning of 5 February, a wild boar penetrated into a metro tunnel in northern Valencia. For almost three hours, the animal ran from police officers who were trying to catch it along lines 1, 2 and 4, causing delays to train services.
The boar was spotted in the Campanar, Empalme and Beniferri areas, after which it entered a tunnel. The incident was reported at around 9:00 a.m., after which about a dozen patrols were dispatched to the scene. Among those who caught the wild animal were police officers and veterinarians from the fisheries and hunting department with rifles and tranquilliser bullets.
The situation was complicated due to the fact that the animal had been hit twice by trains and was injured. As sources in the emergency services told LAS PROVINCIAS, this increased the boar's aggressiveness and the risk of it attacking humans. At around 11:30 a.m., after unsuccessful attempts to catch it, the decision was made to kill the animal.
Last week, the Valencian Parliament ratified a decree aimed at reducing the wild boar population as part of the fight against African swine fever. Among the measures are the installation of traps, including in the areas of l'Horta and Burjassot, as well as near Albufera.
Earlier, the government approved a decree on payments to hunters of €40 for each wild boar killed in areas close to transport routes and pig farms where wild boars may come into contact with humans.
