The Spanish Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has compiled a ranking of the best breakfast biscuits available in Spanish supermarkets. The primary evaluation criterion was the minimum amount of added sugar.
Biscuits remain one of the most popular breakfast items in Spain. However, nutritionists warn that consuming them regularly is less beneficial than opting for whole foods like eggs or fruit. Most commercial biscuits are made with refined flour, palm or sunflower oil, and high amounts of added sugar. The top ratings from the OCU were awarded to brands that successfully reduced these ingredients, particularly sugar.
First place in the ranking went to Carrefour Classic María biscuits (No Salt, No Added Sugar). A 600-gram pack is priced at €2.29.
Second place was awarded to Chiquilín biscuits by Artiach (No Added Sugar), which retails for approximately €4.29 per 422-gram box.
The OCU emphasises that the healthiest choices are generally simple biscuits without fillings, creams, or chocolate glazes. These plain varieties received the highest ratings in the Nutri-Score system due to their significantly lower fat and sugar content.
