Spain's national team routed Austria 3–0 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, to reach the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup. The victory was secured by two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro's first goal for the national team.
Goalkeeper Unai Simón set a new World Cup record — 519 minutes without conceding a goal, surpassing Italy's Walter Zenga.
Oyarzabal opened the scoring in the 36th minute. In the 66th minute, Pedro Porro added to the tally — this was his first goal for the national team. Oyarzabal put the finishing touch in the 89th minute. With his brace, the forward brought his personal tally for the national team to 29 goals, overtaking Fernando Morientes and drawing level with Fernando Hierro. He is now sixth among the top scorers in the history of the Spanish national team.
Spain and Austria had previously met at World Cups only once — in 1978 in Buenos Aires, where a decisive goal by Hans Krankl brought the Austrians a 2–1 victory. Since then, Spain has lost only one of the subsequent ten head-to-head matches, winning six with three draws. In the last five meetings between 1999 and 2009, the Spanish invariably scored goals in bunches — their biggest victory came on November 18, 2009, when Spain thrashed Austria 5–1 in Vienna.
In the round of 16, Spain will play Portugal. The match will take place on July 6 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington at 9:00 p.m. (Spanish time). La Cotorra has put together a selection of sports bars in Valencia where you can watch the match.
